“A good photograph is knowing where to stand.“
Ansel Adams

The thing I love about photography was that it was art but without having to be able to draw or paint. It is creating images with light, sometimes you control the light, sometimes the light controls you but you always do your best to get the most impressive image, or an image that captures the moment as it’s not always all about the wow!
In the old days I would be stuck in a darkroom producing black and white prints and making changes with exposure or bits of card on a stick to hold back parts of the image and to highlight other parts. If not in the dark room I’d be sending film to the processors and waiting 3 days to see what the results looks like. Today, it’s all technology and it’s instant and the creative process really only starts with the click of the camera button but ends with a thousand clicks of the mouse.
Today, having taken hundreds of thousand if not over a million photos I find that you have to take many shots to get that perfect one, so why do we beat ourselves up for failing in other parts of our lives? In photography we fail most of the time. We take hundreds of photographs and dispose of the ones we are not happy with, we make the best of what we have then make it better with the tech and people say wow, thats a great photograph! We can all learn a lot from the attitude of photographers.
The quote above says it well, it’s about being in the right place, but getting to that place may take time an effort. The part Ansel Adams does not say is it is also about being in the right place at the right time. This can also be another effort to do. You take effort to get to the right place and wait lots of time to get the right shot, and all for one image.
